Kremaston Monastery

The Monastery of Kremaston was founded in 1593 and is located 2.5 km away from Neapoli. From the mid-19th to the early 20th century, a rigorous interdisciplinary school was operated in the monastery. Originally, this monastery was habited by monks, but in 1993 it was converted into a nunnery. The 19th-century gold-plated wood-carved temple has despotic icons of the same period and an icon of the Cretan school with Jesus sitting on a thrown, from the 17th century. Architecturally interesting is the monastery’s archontariki, where, according to the tradition, a Hidden School was operating during the Ottoman occupation.
