Fountains of Kritsa

The village of Kritsa of the Agios Nikolaos Municipality is one of the most important semi-mountainous traditional villages of Crete. Three community drinking fountains are located within the village as well as a paved “cobbled street” (Chaniotena site), which have been listed as historical monuments representing the architectural tradition of the area and are inherently linked to the history of Kritsa and the memories of the locals.

Fountain in the area of “Koutsounari”. It is an arch-shaped stone-built fountain.
Fountain in the area of “Kavvousa”. Its distinctive feature is a twin arch-shaped form.
Fountain in the area of “Chaniotena”. It is used for watering the animals. The structure has the typical form of the austere arch-shaped fountains of Crete. This is where the last remaining cobbled street of Kritsa is located, which connects the centre of the village with the plain.
